Peridot is known as the national Gemstone of Egypt. The ancient Egyptians called it “the gem of the sun.” For more than 3500 years now, St John’s Island ( also known as Zabaragad island) has been the mining site for Peridot. As far back 19th century, the Khedive of Egypt had a monopoly on the mines. At one point, the whereabouts of the Island became a mystery for many centuries until it was rediscovered back in 1905.
The Island is located exactly 35 miles of the Egyptian coastal port of Berenica. Record holds it that millions of dollars’ worth of Peridot were produced out of St John’s Island. After the year 1905, production of Peridot gemstone got to its peak but later fell tremendously in the late 1930s. By this time, nothing could be gotten out of it. It remained at a standstill till 1958 when the mines became nationalized. Although parcels of St. John’s Peridot are still seen in the market occasionally, it isn’t known yet if they are old or new ones. Most people believe they are old ones.
